Tony Britten has been making music professionally for a long time in many different genres and disciplines.
A graduate of the Royal College of Music, he started his career in the theatre, where he worked as Music Director for many Cameron Mackintosh productions as well as composing scores for plays in repertory theatres across the country.
After the success of the legendary ‘Guys and Dolls’ at the National Theatre in 1981, which Tony Britten orchestrated and conducted he felt it was time to make a move into film and television where he worked constantly, both as composer and conductor/arranger at the same time as running his opera company; Music Theatre London, for which he wrote lyrics and orchestrations for over a dozen new versions of mainstream operas which received highly successful productions throughout both London and the UK as well as across Europe. Several of these productions were also televised by various European broadcasters and by the BBC.
This led to Tony’s move into directing – initially on stage, but swiftly moving into film and television as he set up his company; Capriol Films, which has a reputation for producing high quality independent work both in the commercial sector and in the niche areas of music and arts. Throughout this more recent chapter, Tony has continued composing – most recently a commission for the London Chamber Orchestra’s Music Junction initiative – ‘Scenes from a Movie’.
Tony Britten’s work in the production music sector is underpinned by his television sports themes, notably for The Champions Hockey League, The Sun Premier League app, the Koc Sports awards in Istanbul and – most significantly, his football anthem for the UEFA Champions League – which after nearly thirty years of continuous broadcast and live use can justly lay claim to being the most famous and globally successful sports theme of all time.
