Dai Watts is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist based in North London, whose music has appeared on TV, film and advertising in the UK, Europe, the US, Australia and the Far East.
Dai Watts initially began playing flute as a child in his birthplace Australia, before going on to became a choral scholar at Tewkesbury Abbey Choir school, learning piano and guitar and finally studying Music at Kings College in London. After graduation he worked as a Musical Director and keyboard player, MD-ing over twenty productions and tours of shows as diverse as ‘South Pacific’, the Rock ’n’ Roll Shakespeare parody ‘From a Jack to a King’, the Madness musical ‘Our House’ and the Ian Dury show ‘Reasons to be Cheerful’. His recording work includes sessions for Andy McKay from Roxy Music and Massive Attack/Bjork producer Nellee Hooper, and his live keyboard work includes stints with Errol Kennedy from Imagination, The Brotherhood of Man and playing Glastonbury on the Spirit of ’71 stage in 2011.
In the UK he has composed music for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, and his Production Music for labels such as EMI, Cavendish and Felt has appeared on TV, film and advertising worldwide, including in such shows as BBC News, BBC Olympics 2020, Hollyoaks and The One Show. Most recently he composed and performed the music for the BAFTA nominated BBC4/Netflix film ‘The Ponds- Still Waters Run Deep’, which documents a year spent with the swimmers at London’s unique outdoor swimming ponds on Hampstead Heath.
Dai’s instrumental releases as a solo artist, including ‘The Ballad of Berwick Street Market’ and ‘Liminalondon’ have also been featured on BBC Radio 3’s iconic new music show Late Junction.
As a Musical Director and pianist, Dai has worked with artists and performers including Michael Ball, Ruthie Henshall, Russel Watson, Mazz Murray, Michael Xavier and Il Divo. He has also been been working with Pete Townshend and Rachel Fuller on their new musical ‘The Seeker’, conducting The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Angel Studios for the recording of the Original Soundtrack album. The CD is scheduled for release in 2022 and features Elton John, Emile Sandé, Christopher Plummer and Pete Townshend.
